Glossary Terms


Scripture- sacred passages from the Bible or another religion
Social structures- related parts of society and communities that work together to function
as a whole, in religion this could be a church community fundraising for their parish.
Prayer- spoken or unspoken way of addressing God in the hope of expressing praise, thanksgiving, confession or a request for help.
Commitment- devoting or dedicating time and energy to a Faith and its God.
Dialogue- an exchange of opinions and ideas about Faith and religion that results in friendly agreement or arrangement
Deep listening- making a sincere and conscious effort to hear and pay attention to something that is being said, and taking it into account in one’s actions.
Empathy- identifying and understanding another person’s feelings, thoughts and hardships
Ethics- the rules of behaviour designed for a particular group or culture
Interconnectedness- showing a relationship between two or more things, being connected
Authentic relationship- a true and genuine way of feeling about and relating to someone else’s feelings
Unity- harmony and agreement between different people and their thoughts, feelings and actions
Diversity- being different from each other and unique, for example, having diverse faiths between friends
Identity- the aspects of life that make a person themselves, such as personality, characteristics, physical appearance, culture and religion.
Respect- the condition of being honoured, in religion this could mean accepting and acknowledging different ideas about faith and practicing this.
Tolerance – tolerating things, especially other people’s behaviour, in religion: accepting different religions and their beliefs
Goodwill- a disposition of kindness and compassion, having concern for others
Inclusiveness- including something ie an idea, custom, religion etc, embracing it and taking it into account
Interreligious- communication or peaceful existence between several different religions
