Symbolism refers to the use of objects or images to represent something else by association, resemblance, or convention. Religious symbolism uses symbols aswell as archetypes, acts, artwork, events or natural phenomena as a way of viewing and understanding religious texts and rituals. The symbolism helps identify important figures and their teachings and expresses moral values of society and the teachings of the religion so that those dedicated to their religion will go among society and display a positive role among one another, bringing their acts closer to their object of worship. The Cross is the most common of the chrisitan symbols because it is a representation of the instrument used for the crucification of Jesus.
The Fish was one of the most important symbols of christ to the early christians representing the miracle of the loaves and fishes.
The Pashcal Lamb is also a symbol of christ in our shepherd and Peter was told to feed his lamb.
The Dove represents the Holy Ghosts and sometimes as representations in Pentecost and for our Lord's baptism. it symbolises the release of the soul in death, and used to recall 'Noah's dove', a harbringer of hope
The Anchor is an ancient symbol in Christianity. It was mostly found in the Roman catacombs representing hope we humans have in Christ beyond this life. There is a verse about the symbol :
“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where Jesus, who went before us, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 6:19-20)
